How Technology Has Changed Teenagers.
In their insightful book, Teenagers and Technology, renowned sociologists, Chris Davies and Rebecca Eynon, argue that the value of socialization has eroded drastically because of technological innovations. According to them, many teenagers have lost touch with the human essence of socialization because of their heavy reliance on technology.
Much of the socialization of the modern youth takes place in the cyberspace. Many credible surveys have revealed that the average youth spends close to two-thirds of their time on the internet. Youthful socialization takes place on Facebook or Twitter. This reality limits the teenagers’ capacity for healthy interpersonal relationships.
Tracing the generational change
Elderly people who were born and raised before the high noon of ultramodern technology are marveling at how today’s teenagers seem clueless about virtues and morals. Many teenage boys and girls cannot appreciate the world in any terms larger than their iPods, iMacs, and play stations.
The effects of technology on teenagers are quite profound in both positive and negative ways. In the positive sense, technology has made it easier and faster for teenagers to access information that appertains to matters of health, fashion, lifestyle, and education. In the negative sense, some aspects of technology are exposing the youth to crime, radicalization, and other vices.
How technology makes teenagers obese
Before the age of play stations, smart phones, and iPads, teenagers used to spend their times on activities that require some measure of physical aggressiveness. However, many teenagers today spend their time on their technology tools such as gaming laptops, which make them lead passive lifestyles throughout the year.
Consequently, the youth become overweight and obese because their bodies cannot burn the excess calories that they consume all the time. Various medical studies have shown an increasing teenage vulnerability to various lifestyle diseases that are associate with general physical inactivity.
The danger of misinformation
The American society is awakening to the danger posed by fake news on social networking sites. There is a strong tendency for people to prefer and believe in the fake news instead of the information from the mainstream media. The main danger lies in the fact that the fake news is not censored, and their truth-value is not guaranteed.
As a result, many teenagers are likely to be misinformed about many important issues that connect with their lives. This implies that technology is likely to ruin the perceptions of the youth about values, morality, and virtue. That is why many youths have been convinced to join the ranks of extremist groups and subversive secret societies.
Without a doubt, technological innovations have made life easier, faster, and merrier for many youths. The beauty of technology reflects in the unique entertainment solutions, virtual education, and many other advantages. However, technology has also imperiled the teenager’s health, misled others, and ruined the value of socialization.
